I need You

We find George at his absolutely most vulnerable in this song… “I Need You” scores uniquely for its bittersweetly mixed tone of plaintive, terminal desperation.

—Musicologist Alan Pollack

Notes on “I Need You”

“I need You” was an enormously important musical milestone for George Harrison.

What had he recorded before this Help! song? Only the With the Beatles song, “Don’t Bother Me,” his first recorded song.

Nothing of George’s made it into A Hard Day’s Night, although Paul and John did write “I’m Happy Just to Dance with You” specifically for him to sing in the movie. (In a September 1980 interview with Playboy, John said of “Happy,” “That was written for George to give him a piece of the action… I couldn’ta sung it.” See song number 87.)

Then came Help! and—surprise!—“I Need You,” and suddenly George Harrison was seen not just as a backup guitarist for Paul and John, but as an accomplished songwriter.
